Quite a Scare (part I)

This story comes from an intermittent dream that I had. The scenario might seem a bit improbable at first, but bear with me. It may start to make sense a bit later.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

LOCATION: unidentified tundra-like region with a camp for people all around the world.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

“Ouch!” I exclaim, as my sister shoves me off the bus. I’m clutching a rather large black bag that drops to the ground with a thud. She giggles evilly, and proceeds to come down herself. My mom is busy looking at the vast yet empty landscape, while my dad is at the back, taking the rest of our bags out of the storage compartment of the bus. “Somebody help me with these darned bags!” “Coming!” I say. I quickly pick up my fallen black bag, and go help my dad out.

I clasp another gargantuan bag and waddle towards our assigned cabin. I feel relieved as I see a heater. My mom also steps into the large room. “Mesmerizing, isn’t it?” “Definitely,” I reply. “There just doesn’t seem to be much wildlife around here.” “Hmm… Maybe we just haven’t seen any wildlife yet. I mean, we literally got here ten minutes ago,” she says. My sister and my dad are playing in the snow.

“Maybe this is the break that I needed,” I contemplate. “Perhaps,” agrees my mom, and heads outside to chuck a snowball at my sister. They all burst into peals of laughter. “Perhaps,” I sigh and fall into a fitful sleep.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

The next day, we meet the owner of the camp. “Welcome, everybody! My name is Geoff, and I’ll be your instructor for this two-day camp. I know it sounds short, but it’ll be a game-changing experience for all of you out there. I would just advise you all to be a bit careful, because a pack of wolves lives around here. The wolves don’t normally come around this area, but just as a precaution, don’t venture out at night. We’ll be engaging in…” I look around to survey our fellow camp-mates. They all seem like pretty okay people. Some of them looked like snitchy rich people, but otherwise, they seemed all right. “…excuse me young lady, are you listening?” I turn my head quickly in embarrassment, but turns out the guy was talking to another young lady.

After a tiring day of ‘activities’, we finally head back to our cabin. Finally, some rest. Just then, someone spoke on the loudspeaker. “Be cautious! Don’t venture out at night. Wolves have been spotted. They will leave by the morning.”

I was too tired to care. I was just about to fall on the bed, but my head hit the bedpost. “Ouch.”

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

TRRRIIINGGGG! I woke up with a start. I shook my head and looked around, dazed. I saw my parents getting ready. “Rise and shine, fellow campers! We’ve got another day full of fun activities!” screamed some idiot on the loudspeaker. Oh wait, his name was Geoff.

I then noticed my sister next to me, snoring away. Damn, she can sleep through anything! I took her by the shoulders and shook her as hard as I could, but to no avail. Then I threw some cold water on her face. She too woke up with a start, but started crying as well. Ugh. Stahp crying, baby.

“Get ready, both of you! And stop harassing your sister.” Pfff. I eventually pulled my sister along and shut the door.

Suddenly, I heard a distant growl. Instantly, I remembered last night’s warning. There’s a wolf on the loose, and it’s near to us.

I contemplated going back to the room with my sister, but then I remembered. My parents are out there. I quickly put her in the room and locked the door from the outside, and rushed to find my parents.
